jakl-artworkLondon based artist JAKL first stepped into the limelight in 2015 as one of Glastonbury’s brightest emerging talents. Immediately securing national radio support from BBC R1’s Huw Stephens who asked him into a session, XFM, BBC Introducing and BBC 6 Music soon followed suit, enthralled by a vocal range both fragile and ethereal, with a stripped-back, graceful sound that only served to heighten it.
aaaaJAKL’s new release ‘Shadows’ appears as a teaser for a slew of new material this year, including work with David Kosten (Bat for Lashes, Everything Everything). A similarly emotive track, it’s a charismatic new example of his compelling vocal, set to production by Sam Miller.
aaaBorn into a family of musicians, JAKL’s influences range from John Martyn, Bon Iver and Jeff Buckley to the music of his opera-singing father. Indeed there is a classical precision to his work, whereas the likeness to Buckely – the sumptuous wails and howls are quickly apparent. it’s a marked talent that has generated national critical acclaim as well as leading him back to Glastonbury last summer to headline the PRS stage.
psx_20170103_163644Speaking on the track, JAKL states : “When you can’t see the light, the shadows are our only comfort. Everything that has gone wrong, everything that can no longer happen is hidden in the darkness.”
